Is Imani a Gay church?
Imani is not a gay or straight church; nor are we a black or white church; we are not a women’s only church or a church just for men; Imani is a part of the Universal church of Jesus Christ, and he is the head of the church. We are a Christ centered, Christ conscious church that believes in a radical theology that weaves Jesus and social justice together to create a unique and colorful tapestry that reflects the diversity of our creator and reflects the love of God. “No matter who you are or where are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!”
What do you mean by Radical Hospitality?
Within the context of Imani, Radical Hospitality means to go beyond our comfort zones, to go to the extremes to welcome those who may not look like us or dress like us; to welcome those who speak a different language and welcome brothers and sisters from different cultures and ethnicities; extend to all, the welcome mat just as Jesus did in biblical times. Since Christ is our example, we believe that he did not turn others away; but instead, broke the rules and risked his reputation and life to include, embrace and covenant with the least among us. There are no strangers in Christ; just sojourners and pilgrims on a spiritual journey. The Quaker author, Palmer Parker puts it this way: “…the essence of hospitality and of the public life is that we let our differences, our mutual strangeness, be as they are, while still acknowledging the unity that lies between us.” In essence, the church is a public place, a school of the spirit, a place where the spirit of God abides; it is not a private social club.
Does Imani preach and teach from the Bible?
Yes and we explore the sacred text of other faiths along with philosophy and ethics. You are encouraged to bring your Bible to worship services and Bible/Book Study discussions.
Does Imani teach that the Bible is the Word of God?
The Bible is The Word; inspired by God and man. The Bible is a historical document with principles, stories, testimonies, conversations and examples of God’s intentionality for humanity and all of creation. We do not interpret the entire bible literally. Biblical translation includes translating words, context, concepts and meanings. Understanding the Canonization Process of the Old and New Testament provides answers to difficult questions and encourages Imani members and participants to be critical thinkers.
Do you have a children’s and youth ministry?
Currently, our children meet at 4:30-5:30pm on second and Fourth Sundays in room 201.
Will Imani have an earlier worship service?
No. If this should change it will be announced on our website and facebook page.
Do I have to be a member to participate in the life of the church?
No. You are welcome to participate with our ministry teams.
How can I join Imani Community UCC?
You can join anytime during our worship service or Bible Study classes; or if you want to schedule an appointment with the Pastor to have a one-on-conversation, you are encouraged to contact the church to setup an appointment. If you are a member of another church, you will need to speak with the Pastor before committing to Imani Community UCC. New member orientation is every six months. We encourage you to prayerfully discern if Imani is the community of Faith that you want to covenant with.
What do you mean by covenant?
A covenant is a promise, an agreement, a contract; however, in the context of Imani, a covenant is a relationship. Joining Imani is a conscious decision to intentionally be in relationship with one another as Disciples of Christ. We are not just called to believe but to belong! Imani is a community of people, not a building full of bodies!
What is Radical Inclusivity?
We agree with Bishop Yvette Flunder, the Presiding Bishop of the Fellowship. The definition for radical inclusivity is the “intentional inclusion of all persons. Inclusivity challenges major fundamental, deep-seated Christian beliefs, doctrines and theologies of the center of society which characterize people on the edge as enemies of God and routinely mistreats, oppresses and excludes people from the community of faith and its institutions. It is our purpose and aim to provide a safe place of refuge for persons who have been wounded by oppressive theologies and to provide a place of nurturing and training for those who feel called to this shared ministry.”
Do you participate in the Sacraments?
Yes, Baptism and Communion.
How can I financially contribute to the church?

You can contribute financially to Imani in a number of ways, including; Tithing [systematic giving-when you give a percentage of your income], Pledges [giving a specific amount monthly, bi-monthly, yearly], Designated Giving [giving to a specific mission or ministry at Imani], General offerings [giving whatever and whenever you can], [Bequest property or a financial gift in your will.] Online giving is available through our website.
